You are not alone.

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. If you are in need of immediate support (but not in crisis) consider reaching out to a warmline. They offer a safe place to call when you just need someone to talk to.

How can I support someone who is struggling?

Listen without judgment

Create a safe space for them to express their feelings and thoughts without fear of criticism. Let them know that you are there for them and care about their well-being.

Take their thoughts seriously

Even if their thoughts of depression or suicide may seem irrational or extreme to you, it’s important to take them seriously and validate their feelings. Avoid dismissing or minimizing their experiences.

Express Empathy and Compassion

Show empathy by Acknowledging their pain and offering reassurance that they are not alone. Let them know that you are there to support them.

Encourage them to find professional help

Urge them to seek professional help from a therapist, counselor, or mental health professional. Offer to help them find resources or accompany them to appointments if they are hesitant.

Stay Connected


Keep in regular contact and check in frequently. Let them know you are available to talk or provide support whenever they are ready.

Encourage Healthy Coping Strategies

Encourage them to engage in activities that promote Relaxation, stress relief, self-care, or things that give them joy — such as hobbies, exercise, or spending time with people they love.

Educate Yourself

Take the time to educate yourself about mental health and suicide prevention, including warning signs, risk factors and availability of resources.

Know when to seek Emergency Help

If the person you care about is in immediate danger or experiencing a mental health crisis, do not hesitate to seek emergency assistance. Call emergency services or take them to the nearest emergency room for evaluation and treatment.
